About
Houston Black Hikers (HBH) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit built on community, wellness, and the healing power of nature.
The story began on December 29, 2024, when Rodney Robinson Jr. decided to take on a new challenge for the new year. His friend Sequoya introduced him to the 52 Hike Challenge, and what started as a personal goal soon became something much bigger. While connecting with others through Black Hikers Unite (BHU), Rodney noticed that people in Houston were constantly looking for local hiking partners. Being a problem solver at heart, he created Houston Black Hikers — and just like that, a movement was born.
Inspired by his mother and sister, who walk together every morning, Rodney made it his mission to bring people together outdoors — to move, to breathe, to heal, and to connect. Since that day, he’s completed over 70 hikes and more than 300 miles, hosted camping experiences, night hikes, wellness events, and led monthly community service projects that help others rediscover balance through nature.
He even turned his passion into purpose by writing a beginner-friendly hiking guide, helping newcomers feel confident, prepared, and excited for their first hike.
At Houston Black Hikers, we believe the outdoors is medicine. Every step on the trail is a step toward healing, connection, and community. What started as one man’s challenge has grown into a movement — one that continues to inspire others to take that first step, together.
